Our first camping trip!

The children were super troopers, and coped with heavy packs and inclement weather without a single grumble or groan. Well done, campers!

Getting ready for our first camp.

The campers have all received back-packs, sleeping mats, Trangia stoves, and tents. They have taken the ‘kit’ home so that they can pack their bags properly.

Campers should come to the KC at 12:00 on Friday. There will be a complete kit check before we leave, so that we can be sure that everyone is properly prepared with the correct items in both large and small packs.

We will go ahead with the camp unless the weather is TERRIBLE! If the trip is cancelled due to bad weather, we will post a message on the blog.

See you Friday!

Session # 4 Cooking Noodles.

Having leaned how to use the trangias in the last session, it was now time to have a go at cooking something!

Session #3 – Using the Trangia Stoves

In this third session, the campers were introduced to the Trangia cooking equipment. The children worked on their own or with a partner to figure out how the equipment fitted together and what all the bits were for. Once everyone was able to assemble the Trangias, they learned how to light them. Everybody had a go at striking matches safely and lighting the burners safely.

Before we knew it, it was time to pack the Trangias away, which took a bit of problem solving. Time flew by so fast that there wasn’t time to cook the noodles! We decided that it was more important that the children had all the time they needed to experiment with unpacking and lighting the cooking equipment. They are now well on their way to becoming competent and confident Trangia users.

When we next meet on Monday 9th of May, we shall continue practicing with the Trangias, and shall cook the noodles that we didn’t get to this week. The work on First Aid, originally scheduled for that session, will be covered during our over-night camp on 27th and 28th May.

Session #2 – Pitching Tents

For session two the club hit the roof of the building (interrupting a Romeo and Juliet rehearsal), and spent the session wrestling to get our tents up. We worked together to figure out how they  were designed, made sure we had all the necessary bits and pieces and finally got to have a sit down in the cool blue interiors.

A whole lot of trial and error, but in the end everyone was successful!

Camping Club First Meeting

We had our first Elementary School Camping Club meeting today.  Ten children had signed up before the break, but some have not yet returned to YIS so today we had six children and four adults.  We began by showing the children how they could use the camping site blog to stay up-to-date with important information regarding our weekly meetings and camping expeditions.  The children used iPads to navigate the blog so that they could show their parents around the blog as part of their camping club homework.

Then the children worked in small groups to think about the things they would need to take on a camping trip.  Then they came together and shared their ideas.   They recorded their ideas under headings such as food, clothing, tools, etc. For homework, the children will compare the list they made with the packing list on the blog and see how the lists compare.
