Japanese Dance & Calligraphy

What amazing opportunities second grade has had this year to experience parts of Japanese traditional culture. Continuing on our Sushi-making experience of a few weeks ago, we have been invited back to the ICJC to experience Japanese Dance and Calligraphy. A wonderful integration with our current unit of inquiry: People can be enriched by their own cultures and the cultures they connect with throughout their lives. 2R Sushi-Making!

As part of our Unit of Inquiry exploring how our lives are enriched by our own cultures and the cultures we connect with, Grade Two were invited to the ICJC to learn how to make sushi! Keep an eye out for our Japanese Dance class next week!

Culture Walk!

Today 2R braved the heat and set out for a Culture Walk around the neighbourhood to see what we could find that we connected to Japanese and other cultures. Students busily noted their findings in their inquiry notebooks and had lots of compelling questions about the origins of everything around them! It was amazing to see how purposefully looking for culture made us look at our surroundings in a whole new way.

Highlights included thinking about how everything from bamboo to vending machines could be a sign of Japanese culture, lots of water breaks in the shade, and having Alicia teach us all how to wash our hands before going to the temple! Thanks to the Japanese department for supporting us to make it happen!

Day One in 2R!

If the first day is anything to go by… it’s going to be a fantastic year!

The new 2R students came happily rolling into the classroom in the morning. We played some getting-to-know-each-other games and spoke a little bit about some of the expectations of our classroom. We had our first sessions in PE and Music, and listened to a story.

Much of the afternoon was spent with pairs of students exploring different areas of the classroom to become class experts on The Class Library, Math Games and Activities, Language Games and Activities, Construction Materials, Craft Materials, Tech Cabinet and more. Once students had had time to learn about their section, they gave a short presentation to the rest of the group on what they had discovered.

Even though Lisa wasn’t able to join us today, she wrote us an email from England, and we took a few moments to write back to her as a class.

Welcome to the New Grade Twos!

Welcome to Grade 2, Zarah, Karthik, Kayleigh, and Ludwig!
(from left to right)

I bet you can’t wait to meet them!

  • Zarah will be in Mr. Raskin’s class. She is Danish, but was born in South Korea. Ask her about the big pool in Thailand. She is a bookworm!
  • Kayleigh will be in Miss Czubak’s class. She is from Australia. She likes the Rainbow Fairy and Princess books.
  • Karthik will be in Miss Czubak’s class. He is from India. Karthik wants to be a pilot and loves reading scary books.
  • Ludwig will be in Ms. Quinn’s class. He is from Sweden and likes football.

Sharing the Planet: Zoorasia!

Yesterday’s trip to Zoorasia was a great window into students’ growing understanding of various concepts relating to this Unit of Inquiry. Students were able to thoughtfully discuss the quality and suitability of the animal habitats, as well as empathize with animals and try to understand their behaviours in the zoo context. A really great trip!

Apologies that the photos are only of a small group of students, each adult moved around with only a few and these were the group in my charge!

Team Time Gymnastics!

Elena, Jessica and Megan ask “Can we do gymnastics at Team Time today? We want to make a show!”
After 45 minutes of recruitment, training, choreography and practice, we rolled the camera! Enjoy!
