Book Club- Respect the Wind

Posted November 16, 2011 By jzraskin@gmail.com

This post is from Elena, in her own words.

We talked about weather in the book club, mine was “Respect the winds”. I didn’t know that is a true story or not. It was about “Maui” who made a kite. And there is the keeper of the wind. There are bottles, sometime there is a strong wind, soft wind misty wind. There are lots bottles. She knows which is which.

What do you think about the story?

Good. Because you know, there is a lot of kinds of Cinderella story but this is like a story from their brain, they don’t just copy.

What did you learn about snowflakes?

There’s three or six branches at the corner.

Lots of snowflakes.

Weather

Posted November 2, 2011 By jzraskin@gmail.com

Today’s post is from Ellie, in her own words.

We went to the weather observatory a couple of weeks ago. We found out about different clouds, what weather different clouds can make.

What have we been doing this week about weather?

We listed some measurement tools that you can use for weather too. We learned about snowflake Bentley, who was very interested in snowflakes. No snowflakes can be ever the same. And I learned that if you count from the lightning until the thunder comes you know how far it is by miles by my book club book, Thundercake.

I learned a lot about weather from my book club books.

A Visit to the Science Lab

Posted October 20, 2011 By jzraskin@gmail.com

With the high school students away on field studies, grade two had a rare opportunity to use their science lab. Chemistry teacher Mr Midgley invited us up to explore some of the forces that influence weather patterns. Before beginning we discussed how:

Air takes up space.
Air takes up more space when it is heated.
Air takes up less space when it is cooled.

Air has mass.
Air has less mass when it is heated.
Air has more mass when it is cooled.

What a great session!

Thanks Mr Midgley!

The weather station

Posted October 19, 2011 By jzraskin@gmail.com

The following comment is from Nicholas, in his words…

We went to the weather station. We went to the earthquake room.

What did you see in the earthquake room?

There was a machine. The machine senses how strong an earthquake. The earthquake that we had last year was  5.  It was cool.  Also we got to make clouds.

How did you make clouds?

We pumped air into the bottle  and we pushed a button on the bottle (to open the bottle).  Then it made cloud. There was a little bit of water because clouds are made of water in the air. It was cool too.
