Communication Share

Posted April 29, 2013 By jzraskin@gmail.com

Throughout this unit of inquiry we’ve explored a wide range of communications. Last week, with our strong foundation established, each student chose a variety of communication that they really wanted to dig into. From sign language to ink-making to Morse code each student spent time considering what experiments and observations they could attempt, what media they could consult and who might have expertise in their communication of choice.

After a couple days of research, students began considering ways they could share the results of their inquiry. As luck would have it, we visited the fifth grade exhibition and saw the way they organized themselves to share their learning. That became our blueprint and on Friday we had a mini communication exhibition of our own. Each student displayed and presented their insights in a way they considered would best communicate their learning. From posters and dioramas, to a model telegraph and videos about how a fax machine works and how to talk to your dog, everyone had a chance to share.

Enjoy a couple photos and videos of our learning!

Student Led Conferences

Posted March 22, 2012 By jzraskin@gmail.com

One of my favourite days of the year! It’s always such a pleasure to see my students and their families sharing the fun of learning experiences.

Students thoughtfully proposed a huge range of potential learning activities in a Wallwisher brainstorm. Then we developed the materials we would need to share the most popular and appealing with our families. Finally, students used their “passport” to organize themselves for the day, planning their first and second choices for each strand of learning.

On the day of the conferences, students were completely independent, enjoying sharing this time and learning with their parents… All I did was sit at my desk, give them a heads up on how their time was progressing now and then, and take a few photos!

It was great to see so much laughter, sharing and enjoyment. Check out the gallery:

“Today we did spelling centres. In our group we did our spelling words in American Sign Language and the Braille Alphabet. I chose to do sign language. On the computer we used photo booth to take take photos of us signing our words. Our words this week were un words so if you put in front of some words it makes them the opposite”
